INNOVATIVE CANNABIS PRODUCTS

By Abby Hutmacher

Marijuana’s new found legal status in certain parts of the nation has opened up the doors of opportunity for thousands of companies and entrepreneurs. No longer bound by a black market status, marijuana cultivators and product manufacturers are blazing new ground by creating unique, cannabis-infused products for an eager audience.

Cannabis flower and edibles aside, these unique marijuana-infused products are sure to help you live the high life.

Lotions

Lotions and balms are an excellent way to administer topical cannabis. Doing so has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation in muscles and joints, lessen the severity of certain skin conditions and improve the elasticity of the skin.

Even though marijuana-infused lotions won’t cause the characteristic “high” associated with many other cannabis products, the health benefits of applying cannabinoids directly to the skin (the largest organ in the body) cannot be ignored.

Patches

Mary’s Medicinals has created a patch that actually can get you high. Unlike other topical products on the market, these patches contain carrier agents that help beneficial cannabinoids pass through the blood brain barrier to make the user feel stoned. The results are an on-going body high accompanied by a mild sense of euphoria.

Patches come in a variety of cannabinoid profiles (including CBD, CBN, THC, THCa, and THC:CBD) which makes customizing your cannabinoid intake very simple. Patches typically last for about 12 hours though note that the more active you are, the more quickly they will run out.

Bath salts

Whether you’re trying to ease muscle pain or just looking for a way to indulge your senses, cannabis-infused bath salts could be just what you’re looking for. Combining the healing power of cannabis with the therapeutic properties of salts and essential oils, these bath salts will leave you stress free and rejuvenated. They are also a great way to treat PMS.

Acne treatment

Cannabinol, or CBD, is the second most studied cannabinoid, gaining special attention for its restorative properties. Though not psychoactive like THC, CBD can reduce the size of skin imperfections (like acne) and improve skin elasticity. Acne treatments that have been infused with cannabinoids (specifically CBD) therefore offer more than a promise to clear up skin; they can actually make you look younger, too!

Shampoo

Hemp seed oil is commonly used in shampoos, conditioners and other beauty products because it moisturizers skin, strengthens hair and stimulates hair follicles. Adding trace amounts of cannabinoids like THC and CBD (in addition to a special oil that helps the cannabinoids penetrate the skin) intensifies these positive benefits making marijuana-based hair care a trend worth trying.

Lip Balm

Medicated lip balm is a great way to discretely consume marijuana. Not only will it soothe your sore lips, but it will give you a little buzz, too. You can choose a sativa-based balm for an invigorating lift throughout the day, or an indica-based balm to help you relax in the evening.

Production of cannabis-infused lip balms is relatively simple, resulting in another type of marijuana edible. First, cannabinoids are extracted using food-grade solvent. Next, the solvent is purged and finally the concentrated cannabis is added to the balm (which is usually a combination of coconut oil, wax and essential oils).

Personal Lubricant

Though it probably won’t result in a typical head or body high, THC-infused lubricants can make a welcome guest in the bedroom, no less. That’s because the cannabinoids found in these products (Evos and Foria, for example) can easily penetrate female genitalia. Though it takes about 15 minutes to take effect, once it does, (female) users can expect to feel a warm, relaxed sensation in the area coupled with “heightened” sensations.

Toothpaste

New York-based company, AXIM Biotechnologies, has developed a line of Cannabis-infused toothpaste and mouthwash. The product line, called Oraximax, is the first of its kind to not only clean the teeth and oral cavity, but to improve its overall condition by infusing the cannabinoid CBG into the product. This is especially promising for those who suffer from chronic tooth pain or other dental problems because of CBG’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties. CBG is also a bone stimulant which means that it could potentially help restore damage caused by cavities.

Toothpicks

The Seattle-based company, Kush Creams, has developed a cannabis-infused toothpick that can get you high quickly and discretely. The aptly named “walking stick” is great for outdoor adventures or busy days because it allows you to consume a single dose of cannabis while tending to other tasks, as well. Just suck on the stick for about 20 minutes (rotating periodically) to feel its effects.

Coffee Pods

Sometimes the best part of waking up is getting baked off of the coffee in your cup. At least that’s how it is when you’ve got a stash of cannabis-infused coffee pods from Fairwinds Manufacturing. These K-cup knock-offs are designed to brew a single-serving of cannabis coffee at a time, and are compatible with most Keurig coffee machines. They can be purchased in single doses or packs of six from Uncle Ike’s or The Gallery in Washington.

If you’re going to be visiting a marijuana-friendly state, it’s likely you’ll be trying any number of cannabis-infused products on the market. And though standard flower is a common go-to, why not experiment with something a bit more unique? Whether you’re interested in new ways to get stoned or just want to relieve pain and tension, we’re sure you’ll fine product for you.
